The first season of The Rings of Power, an Amazon series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, has come to an end. The eight-part fantasy drama has brought viewers back to Middle-earth before The Lord of the Rings, where they have met both old and new characters.
The amazing production has given us amazing new worlds like the island of Nmenor, the land of the Elves (Lindon), and the underground capital of the Dwarves (Khazad-dûm). It also gave us the unforgettable sight of the once-beautiful Southlands turning into the dark, foreboding world of Mordor, which is ruled by the Orcs.
Rings of Power Season 2 Renewal Status
Yes, and there will be more. When Amazon bought the TV rights to Tolkien’s works in 2017, it promised to make at least $1bn worth of shows over the next five years.
Since the first season was so popular—25 million people watched the first show in the first 24 hours after it came out, which was Prime Video’s biggest premiere ever—it would be surprising if Amazon didn’t make all five seasons. On October 3, 2022, the second season of The Rings of Power started filming, just as the first season was coming to an end.
The Rings of Power Season 2 Release Date
We don’t know when Rings of Power season 2 will come out, but when we do, we’ll let you know here.
Since shooting just started, and the second season looks like it will be just as epic as the first, it’s unlikely that we’ll see season 2 of The Rings of Power until at least spring 2024.
The first season was made during the world Covid pandemic, so that makes sense. Filming had to stop for six months in March 2020, but it started up again in September 2020. It took another two years for the series to hit our screens.
But don’t think you can go back to Middle-earth any sooner just because there is no closure this time. Showrunner Patrick McKay told The Hollywood Reporter that he doesn’t expect to start working on season 2 for “another couple of years.” This means that we might not find out what happens next until the fall of 2024.
What Will Be the Plot of the Rings of Power Season 2?
We don’t know much about the plot of the next season yet, but Galadriel will probably still be upset about her failed crush, bless her. In an interview with Esquire in October 2022, Payne said, “Even though we know that Sauron was involved in some of the science behind making the rings, we still see [Galadriel] give the go-ahead to make the rings. She also has to take some blame: “I gave the Dark Lord power.” On a float, I saved his life. I was there when he went from being unknown to being in charge of an army. She has a lot to think about and be responsible for. I think she will have to pick up the pieces and see how her choices affect her different connections.
We can therefore expect some friction between Galadriel and Elrond, who seemed to find out who Halbrand really was when he picked up a genealogy scroll at the end of season 1. “I think it’s pretty clear at the end that there’s a bit of conflict at that moment,” writer Gennifer Hutchinson told Polygon. “She has asked him for a lot. We were really after that. “This is the real test; you promised to trust me,” he said. We wanted to make sure that got across.”
Who Will Be in the Cast of Season 2?
Most of the main cast is set to come back, including Morfydd Clark, Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Charlie Vickers, Markella Kavenagh, Daniel Weyman, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Sophia Nomvete, and more.
But Prime Video has also said that the already large group will grow. One newbie who hasn’t been named yet will play Crdan, an old, wise elf who was important in Middle-earth’s Second, Third, and Fourth Ages.
Prime Video has also announced that the following actors will join season 2: Gabriel Akuwudike (Hanna); Yasen ‘Zates’ Atour (The Witcher); Ben Daniels (The Crown); Amelia Kenworthy; Nia Towle (Persuasion); Nicholas Woodeson (Silent Witness, Skyfall); Sam Hazeldine (Peaky Blinders), taking over for Joseph Mawle as the orc villain Adar; Ciarán Hinds (Game of Thrones); Rory Kinnear (Skyfall, Spectre); and Tanya Moodie (Motherland).
Producers’ Statement About the Rings of Power Season 2?
Famously, the first Lord of the Rings movies and the first season of The Rings of Power were shot in New Zealand. However, the makers have said that won’t be the case for season two. There have been rumors that S2 will be shot in the UK instead.
Showrunner Patrick McKay told The Playlist, “I think if we answered in too much detail, we’d give away where the journey is going in coming episodes. It’s enough to say that trips to other places are a big part of the story in Tolkien’s world.
